Do Men Prefer Purity The Need for Cognitive Awareness and Focus Part 3
Important Terms and Concepts
Axiom: A claim that is regarded as having already been established, can be treated as self-evident, and can be used as a premise for current or future arguments.
First Principles: The fundamental components and concepts on which a system of thought, analysis, or action is based. Revisiting first principles can be useful in maintaining or renewing direction of a pursuit or process. It can be a tool used to establish or reestablish how current efforts fit in with those principles.
Condescending Posture: It’s possible to easily recognize when someone is being condescending via body language and tone. It’s also evident sometimes when a person decides to point out an axiom in such a way to imply that you don’t understand it (which is different than merely revisiting first principles). In this section of the debate, someone felt the need to point out that birth control needed to be invented before it could be introduced to the general public. Invention prior to introduction and mass production is an axiom.
Arguments/Debates/Discussions can be saved by clarifying questions. Clarifying questions can be things like: “Can you explain what you mean by that?” “Are you saying…” “Let me know if I’m right. So far, I’m hearing…” It’s useful to be sure you understand what is being argued before you agree or refute. This simple tool helps prevent having two different conversations and/or simply yelling past one another.
If you never establish the facts, you can never answer the question, “What do we do about it?”
The Point of Self Awareness: In the U.S. And possibly many other western countries, the suggestion seems to exist that the point of self awareness is to realize how great you are. A significant value of self awareness is so that you improve your understanding of yourself, others, and the implications of your actions so that you don’t keep making the same mistakes and hurting yourself and others.
Psychologists, Jason Chin and Jonathan Schooler define meta-awareness as a state of deliberate attention toward the contents of conscious thought, serving as an appraisal of experiential consciousness. – We’ll talk more about what that means as we continue our journey. Meta-Awareness is hugely important for you to be able to direct yourself, to set and complete missions, and to prevent your consciousness from being pushed along by external stimuli like a leaf in a river. You can command your consciousness.
