Police Paralyzed His Son

Notes and Background

In June of 2021 Paris Police Officer Derek Bristow and his partner responded to a single vehicle accident and were able to trace the vehicle to Colton Carico.

At Carico’s residence, the officers first spoke to Carico’s girlfriend who initially lied to the officers. Ultimately, officers were able to determine that Carico was at the residence.

Eventually, Carico emerged from the residence with a rifle and threatened to commit suicide with the rifle. Carico threatened to shoot himself saying that he would blow his brains out right in front of them.

When Carico turned to go back into his residence, Derek Bristow shot Carico in the back. As a result of the shooting, Colton Carico was paralyzed.

The Texas Rangers investigated the shooting and cleared Bristow of any wrongdoing. The Carico family does not agree with the decision and has filed a civil lawsuit which is pending at the time of this writing.

Colton Carico’s father, Joey Carico seized multiple opportunities to express his disdain for the police department in response to the shooting.

In January of 2023, Joey Carico saw Paris Texas Officer Derek Belcher sitting in his police cruiser. Mr. Carico gave Officer Belcher the finger.

Belcher responded by following Mr. Carico to a nearby parking lot. Belcher got out of his cruiser and, while on duty, in uniform, and wearing his service weapon, challenged Mr. Carico to a fight.

At the time of this writing, Officer Belcher is on paid administrative leave.

In this video, we do a deep dive into the actions, motivations, and tactics employed by Officer Belcher. We also discuss the implications of this sort of behavior from officers of the law.
